Instead of chasing the season’s trends, at ID® we are focused on creating Corporate Wear with a classic, timeless and durable design that does not go out of fashion and keeps its shape and maintains its colour wash after wash and which can be reordered again and again - year after year. We have asked our designer, Lene, five questions - read on and get an insight into the design process at ID®.

5 questions for the designer

1. How do you get ideas for a new design?

Our ideas for new designs are based on our product strategy. We are focused on making products that solve concrete needs that our customers have and which promote a common identity. It is very important for us to be able to offer solutions that are designed based on durable qualities and that the design and fit ensure that the product has a long service life.

We find inspiration in many places, both in our everyday lives, from inspiration trips and when visiting customers and suppliers. We are always working on having a complete and contemporary product range. New items can range from adding new sizes and colours to entirely new products.

We are continuously working with what we call ‘design bubbles’. Here we start using a conceived need and then work with new design ideas where fabrics and items can support our customers and cover a need better than how it is currently being met. This work often stretches over years until we are happy with the result.

2. How would you describe a good design?

When talking about Corporate Wear, a good design is a timeless design with a well-thought-out functionality, a high level of comfort and a product that can be used over and over again - wash after wash.

A good design can be included in many different contexts and solve a need for many people - and not least, create a community and an expression that optimally serves our customers’ messages.

3. How is a high level of quality ensured?

Quality has always been part of our DNA. We believe that a good product that lasts for a long time is more ethical and environmentally friendly than a product from the ‘use and discard’ culture. Therefore, quality assurance is also a top priority when we design a new product, and the focus is always on selecting the right high-quality materials, ensuring a good fit and having consistency between colours. We always base our work on materials and functionalities that we have tested and come from suppliers with whom we have long-term business relationships.

We always carry out product testing in our Quality Lab, but it is just as important to do real-life testing among end users, where we subsequently evaluate factors such as wear and tear and optimise the quality of the product based on this data. A thorough preliminary work and ongoing evaluations ensure a good quality.

4. How does a typical design process look?

The design process consists of several phases where both the product manager, manufacturer and designer are exchanging ideas freely on an ongoing basis, and this allows us to ensure both a good design, a good fit and a selection of the right materials.

A typical design process consists of three parts: Trend, inspiration and sourcing. At ID® we do not chase seasonal trends, but it is still important for us to know what is going on. Therefore, a design process also always begins with us investigating trends and looking for inspiration, and then I will make a proposal for a product plan and several different designs that we will then get samples of. The samples are an important tool for us, as we use them for evaluation, testing and adjusting the fit. Sometimes this process can go back and forth multiple times until we are completely satisfied and the final design can begin to be worked with.

5. What are your best tips for extending the service life of the clothes?

Take good care of your clothes and only wash them when necessary - sometimes it is fine to just air them out instead, as this can also freshen up the clothes. Before washing your clothes, it is always a good idea to check the care label which is inside of the clothes and which tells you how the clothes are to be washed. If you wash your clothes correctly, they will last longer.

We have made a guide for how you can extend the service life of your clothes by using 10 simple washing tips. You can read the guide here.
